Who are you putting in your corner?


“Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.”  Recognize these words?  Most may recognize these words from greatest heavyweight champion of all time.  That’s right, the legend… the man… the famous… Muhammad Ali, also known in his earlier years as Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr.

Not only was Muhammad Ali an amazing boxer, he was also someone who entered the ring anticipating a win.  He went in manifesting his win.  

When you are entering into the boxing ring of life, what are you manifesting?

“If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it – Then I can achieve it.” ~ Muhammad Ali

He believed, envisioned, and spoke his success into existence.  He also chose specific people to guide him in and out of the ring.  This choice, his choice of whom he surrounded himself with, assisted him in his overall success, no matter what others thought or not.  Who are you choosing to guide you in the ring of life?

“Surround yourself with only people who will take you higher.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

One of Ali’s closest confidants was his coach and mentor Angelo Dundee.  His coach gave him space when needed, challenged him to be his best, stayed loyal to him (in the ring and off), and pulled the plug on situations when Ali wouldn’t/couldn’t do it for himself.  This relationship placed them with the title of heavyweight champion, not once, not twice, but three times. Only losing 5 out of 61 matches, 2 of which he later rematched and won!

Who are you putting in your corner?  If you find yourself going through your ten rounds of life being the one knocked out in the first couple of rounds, you may want to consider who you are placing in your corner.  

If you are surrounding yourself with people who are not taking you higher in life but continually bringing you down, how will you find the endurance and stamina to continue the fight and really take the win?

When my partner and I first decided to start a business together we both entered a new arena.  Not only would we be fighting against the well known statistics of the 70% partnership failure rate, we also knew we would be fighting against time, money, popularity, newness, etc.   

So what do you think we did?  

We walked the same path we now walk with many others.  

We hired a coach!  

We chose someone that aligned our strategies, challenged our decision making, ensured consistency, pointed out and acknowledged our strengths, frequently acted as a trusted sounding board, pushed us past our limited thoughts (yes, even coaches have this at times), and provided us with clarity around the spaghetti noodles we threw at the wall. 

I share this message with you not to toot the horn of coaches (well, maybe a little), but to share the relevance and testimony of what a coach can do for all of us.  We know the ability and strength that comes from shifting energy, holding accountability, and removing limitations.   

Sometimes a coach/mentor/consultant maybe a close friend and confidante – whoever that person or people may be – honor yourself and put the right people in your corner guiding you to the best you!
